Sailing in the Maldives offers turquoise lagoons, remote atolls, and incredible marine life. The Maldives consists of 26 atolls and over 1,000 islands, with top cruising areas including North & South Malé Atolls for resorts and diving, Ari Atoll for whale sharks and manta rays, and Baa Atoll (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) for pristine reefs. Navigation requires caution due to coral reefs, strong currents, and shifting sandbanks, making good charts and satellite imagery essential.
Anchoring is restricted in many areas to protect reefs, but mooring buoys are available in popular spots. A cruising permit is required, and clearance must be done in Malé. Provisioning is limited outside major islands, and alcohol is restricted. Respecting local customs and marine conservation rules ensures a smooth and unforgettable sailing experience.
